Pre-Junior - Introduction to Figure Skating

The Pre-Junior program is the transition for skaters from CanSkate to STARSkate, Skate Canada’s mainstream figure skating program.

Skaters can expect to continue developing their CanSkate curriculum skills while also being introduced to figure skating-specific skills. 

Designed for skaters who have completed up to Stage 3 of CanSkate and have an interest in figure skating, this program focuses on the advanced CanSkate skills but with a figure skating emphasis. 

Skaters will work on edges, turns, jumps, spins, and creative movement, continuing to build on the CanSkate curriculum with a higher level of difficulty.

Pre-Junior is for skaters who have completed Stage 3 of CanSkate or equivalent; participants must be able to skate forward and backward, glide on one foot, and stop. 

Program Details

Group Lessons: Skaters receive instruction in small groups on full ice during designated figure skating session times.

Professional Coaching: Lessons are taught by NCCP Professional Coaches from our coaching team. Our team coaching approach ensures that skaters benefit from the expertise of various coaches.

Skill Development: Skaters are introduced to fundamental skills and building on them with the goal of advancing up into the STARSkate or Competitive Skate programs, including the Skate Canada testing program, competitions, and more.

Required Equipment

• Figure Skates: Proper lace-up figure skates with intact toe pick.

• Helmet: CSA-approved helmet for skaters up to and including CanSkate Stage 5. (OSC Coaches will advise on helmet use for Pre-Junior skaters)

• Clothing: Skating tights, leggings or skating dress/skirt, fitted jacket/sweater, mittens/gloves. (Hooded sweatshirts and jeans are not permitted)
