Pathway to Figure Skating
Working Towards Figure Skating
At OSC, the path to our figure skating program, StarSkate, begins with building a strong foundation in the basics through CanSkate! Here’s how it works...
Step 1: CanSkate (Up to Stage 3)
Skating begins with our CanSkate program, with skaters progressing through the first three stages. This is where the foundation of skating is built!
Figure skating requires a strong foundation of balance, forward and backward skating, stopping and 1-foot glides on either foot.
Step 2: Invitation to Pre-Junior
Once skaters have successfully completed CanSkate Stage 3, they will receive an invitation from our coaches to join the intro to figure skating program, Pre-Junior. This invitation is based on the skater's readiness and has an interest in or potential in figure skating.
Step 3: Pre-Junior Program
Once your skater is invited to and registers for the Pre-Junior program, they will continue to build on their foundational figure skating skills with more focused training.
In this small group program, skaters will complete the remaining figure skating skills in the CanSkate curriculum.
This transition program helps skaters refine their skills, preparing them for more advanced moves and independent practice.
Typically, skaters stay in Pre-Junior for a full season before moving up to the mainstream StarSkate program (give/take, depending on the individual).
Step 4: Junior StarSkate
Once a skater has demonstrated that they are ready to work independently, skaters will be invited to the Junior level of the STARSkate program.
The STARSkate program is divided into Junior, Intermediate, and Senior levels, where skaters will continue to develop their skills, have the opportunity to learn the four disciplines of skating (FreeSkate, Skills, Dance and Artistic) and progress through the higher levels of figure skating including participate in local events such as competitions.
Already had lessons?
Participated in CanSkate or other skating program before?
OPTION 1: Register in and participate in a session of CanSkate. Coaches will assess your skater as they practice their skills in CanSkate and will advise you and your skater on the next steps.
OPTION 2: Skaters that have previously had lessons either at OSC, another Skate Canada Club or are slightly older or feel they have the skills require (Stage 3 CanSkate skills) may look to book an on-ice assessment with one of our Professional Coaches.
These sessions are booked based on ice and coach availability and cost $10 per skater. This 10-15 minute on-ice assessment requires a skater to wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet, figure skates and gloves.
